| Duffy’s
City Buses began trading in 1954, when Tom and Marie Duffy purchased
the local Bundaberg bus service from Mr. Earl Johnson. Immediately
they set about improving the quality of services and buses.
The buses serviced the schools and conducted urban and charter
services, operating seven days per week.
As cars
became more readily available, urban services were starting
to struggle, however the introduction of free transport to
school, helped keep the business viable. During this time
a number of services were deleted because of the fall in passenger
numbers. These included the picture service, workers’
service and Saturday and Sunday services.
In 1975, Tom Duffy
passed away and other family members carried on the business.
In 1981, Paul and Lyn Duffy purchased the business in their
own right. Paul and Lyn remain the owners to this day.
During
the 1980’s, Duffy’s began rebuilding their urban
services in addition to maintaining the school and charter
services. In the late 80’s it was decided that the charter
side of the business would have to stand alone, as the owners
were currently subsidizing it. Because of the competitive
nature of charter work and a number of new companies coming
to Bundaberg, it was decided to phase out charter work and
concentrate on school and urban services. This was a major
paradigm shift, however it gave the company the opportunity
to refocus it goals and set in place services and vehicles
that were of the highest standard.
In July
1994 the urban services were extended to include many areas
of Bundaberg. In July 1999, these services were updated with
more services per day, new timetables and integrated services
that allow people to purchase one ticket to go to any destination.
Duffy’s City Buses has one of the most modern fleets
and most regular timetables in regional Queensland.
Each day
Duffy’s transport up to 2000 children to and from school
in addition to an average of 800 paying passengers on the
urban services. Our aim is to continue to build upon these
foundations and provide public transport that is highly regarded
by the local residents.
Duffy’s fleet consists of 14 buses. Seven of these buses
are under 6 years old. Of these six buses, 2 are kneeling
buses they lower to the height of the gutter) and five are
low floor easy access buses (they have no steps which enable
easy access for the elderly, wheelchairs and prams.). The
fleet is continually being updated and plans are in place
to purchase additional buses in years to come.
Duffy's
City Buses employ 21 people on a permanent or part time
casual basis and our fleet travels approximately 400
000 kilometres per year.
